Rugby fans heading to the much-anticipated Castle Lager Rugby Championship match between the Springboks and Australia on Saturday, 16 August, are being urged to leave their cars at home and use public transport.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned of major traffic disruptions around Emirates Airline Park (formerly Ellis Park Stadium) on Springboks match day.
“There will be limited parking and heavy traffic around the stadium for the Springboks-Australia match. We ask people to use Park-and-Ride, taxis, trains, or other transport options to avoid frustration,” said JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.

Public Transport Options for the Springboks vs Australia Match
To ease congestion, several alternative transport services will be available:
Park-and-Ride Buses will run between 13:00 and 15:00, with return trips from 20:00. Buses will operate from:
Clearwater Mall
Cresta Shopping Centre
Montecasino
Melrose Arch
Mall of Africa
Centurion Mall
Menlyn Park
Greenstone Shopping Centre
East Rand Mall
The Glen Shopping Centre
Gold Reef City
Sandton City
The Grove Mall
Taxi Shuttles will run from Eastgate Mall and St. John’s College in Houghton.
Gautrain and PRASA Trains: Fans can take the Gautrain to Park Station, then switch to a PRASA train directly to Ellis Park Station.
E-hailing Services (like Bolt and Uber) will have a dedicated pick-up/drop-off point at Umjantshi House, Wolmarans Street in Braamfontein.
Rea Vaya Buses will operate on their regular routes.
Parking and Private Buses
Parking near the stadium will be minimal. Only VIPs will have access to secure parking inside Ellis Park Parkade and Johannesburg Stadium.
There’s also no guaranteed space for private buses. Operators are advised to make arrangements in advance with:
Jan Seaba (PRASA): 083 700 3747
Jan Schoeman (Park-and-Ride): 079 101 2447
George Stainton (Stadium Management): 082 775 0887
“We are asking everyone attending to plan and use these options to make it easier for themselves and for others. Let’s make it a safe and enjoyable day,” said Fihla.
The JMPD will have officers on duty to manage traffic and assist the public.
