Qin Zhanpeng: Minister at the Chinese Embassy in South Africa speaking at the Haier launch
Revolutionary energy-efficient technology by Haier debuts with a strategic heritage brand, Kwikot, partnership.
Johannesburg — South African households now have access to the world’s leading home appliance brand as Haier officially enters the market, bringing 17 consecutive years of global excellence to address the nation’s urgent need for energy-efficient living solutions.
The launch represents more than just new products on shelves. It marks a significant investment in South Africa’s manufacturing future and a direct response to household electricity costs that have surged 107% in just four years.
“Today marks a historic moment for South African consumers,” says Claudia Henkel, Brand and Media Manager for Haier South Africa. “We’re bringing the world’s number one global appliance brand to a market that desperately needs energy-efficient solutions. Our products deliver up to 60% energy savings, whilst our air conditioners actively purify indoor air by eliminating bacteria.”
A Four-Decade Journey of Innovation
Founded in 1984, Haier Group has grown from a struggling refrigerator workshop in Qingdao, China, into a global powerhouse with operations spanning 163 manufacturing centres worldwide. The company’s 2024 global revenue reached RMB 401.6 billion (approximately USD 55.9 billion), supported by more than 130,000 employees across six major industrial ecosystems.
Euromonitor International has ranked Haier as the world’s number one major appliance brand by retail volume for 17 consecutive years. Fortune magazine lists Haier Smart Home among both its Global 500 and World’s Most Admired Companies.
Strategic Market Entry Through Local Manufacturing
Haier’s South African expansion leverages a strategic partnership with Kwikot, the nation’s most established manufacturer of electric water heaters. Established in 1903, Kwikot operates a manufacturing facility in Benoni, employing 900 people, with the majority in blue-collar manufacturing, distribution, and after-sales service roles.
“Since Haier became our shareholder in 2024, we’ve seen massive potential for growth not just in South Africa but throughout the African region,” says Murray Crow, Managing Director of Kwikot. “Their investment demonstrates a genuine commitment to local production and job creation. We currently hold 60% market share in electric water heating, and we’re now expanding into exciting new categories, including advanced water filtration and dispensing products from the Haier brand.”
The partnership provides Haier with immediate access to Kwikot’s established distribution network, owned facilities, and renowned after-sales service infrastructure. The acquisition, valued at ZAR 2.45 billion, was completed in December 2024.
Smart Technology Meets Energy Efficiency
Haier’s initial South African product range addresses both rising electricity costs and evolving consumer expectations for intelligent home solutions. The portfolio includes smart inverter refrigerators with diagnostic capabilities, high-efficiency washing machines designed for ultra-low water consumption and noise levels, heat pump tumble dryers delivering 50% energy savings compared to conventional models, and smart air conditioners featuring climate control with integrated air purification systems.
Several product ranges incorporate artificial intelligence capabilities that optimise performance based on usage patterns and environmental conditions. AI-enabled refrigerators can monitor food freshness and suggest recipes, whilst smart washing machines with AI technology automatically adjust wash settings for different fabric types. The company’s Series 6 cooking appliances feature AI-powered PreciTaste technology that recognises food types and automatically sets optimal cooking parameters.

Global Sports Sponsorship Portfolio
Haier’s commitment to excellence extends beyond product innovation into high-profile sports sponsorships. The company maintains partnerships with leading football clubs, including Liverpool FC and Paris Saint-Germain, signed in September 2025. Haier sponsors major tennis events, including the ATP Tour (extended through 2028), Roland-Garros, the Rolex Paris Masters, the Australian Open, and the Mutua Madrid Open. The company also maintains football partnerships with La Liga, Liga Portugal, and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, positioning the brand alongside elite performers across multiple sporting disciplines.
Comprehensive Service Commitment
Recognising that product quality alone doesn’t guarantee customer satisfaction, Haier has established a national service network with authorised installers across major metropolitan areas. The company commits to 48-hour response targets, comprehensive spare parts availability, and extended warranty options.
“Our investment in South Africa sends a powerful message to the government, industry stakeholders, and communities,” Crow adds. “We’re not just importing products. We’re creating jobs, manufacturing locally, and building long-term infrastructure. We’ve already secured our first orders from South America through new production lines that started operating in January.”
The official media launch event in Johannesburg on 2 February brought together industry stakeholders, retail partners, and media representatives for hands-on demonstrations of Haier’s smart appliance ecosystem and real-world usage scenarios.
